چکیده

Hydrophilic surfactant proteins, surfactant protein A (SP-A) and surfactant protein D (SP-D), have impor¬ tant roles in modulating the host defense functions in the peripheral airways. It has been reported that cig¬ arette smoke may alter the component and function of pulmonary surfactant. In this study, we determined the contents of SP-A and SP-D in BAL fluids ofhealthy smokers and nonsmokers by enzyme-linked immun¬ osorbent assay using monoclonal antibodies against each protein. The contents of SP-A and SP-D in BAL fluids were significandy (p<0.05) decreased in smokers compared to those in nonsmokers, although there was

The hydrophilic proteins of lung surfactant as a prognostic marker in experimental pneumonia

Abstract BACKGROUND: SP-A and SP-D are hydrophilic proteins which regulate the inflammatory response of the lung. Pasteurella multocida is one of the most common bacteria isolated from calves suffering from shipping fever pneumonia, one of the most problems in dairy herds. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of surfactant content may provide a valuable diagnostic tool for detection of calf pneumonia due to ...

Phorbol ester inhibits surfactant protein SP-A and SP-B expression.

Effects of the tumor promoter, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), on expression of pulmonary surfactant proteins, SP-A and SP-B, were determined in a human pulmonary adenocarcinoma cell line (H441-4). TPA decreased cellular SP-A content in association with decreased de novo synthesis of SP-A as assessed by [35S]methionine incorporation. Effects of TPA were time (0-72 h) and dose (IC50 ...

Competitive adsorption: a physical model for lung surfactant inactivation.

Charged, surface-active serum proteins can severely reduce or eliminate the adsorption of lung surfactant from the subphase to the alveolar air-liquid interface via a kinetically controlled competitive adsorption process. The decreased surfactant concentration at the interface leads to higher surface tensions during the compression of the interface during breathing. The correspondence between t...

Surfactant function and composition in premature infants treated with inhaled nitric oxide.

OBJECTIVES We hypothesized that inhaled nitric oxide treatment of premature infants at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia would not adversely affect endogenous surfactant function or composition. METHODS As part of the Nitric Oxide Chronic Lung Disease Trial of inhaled nitric oxide, we examined surfactant in a subpopulation of enrolled infants. Tracheal aspirate fluid was collected at specif...

Very low surfactant protein C contents in newborn Belgian White and Blue calves with respiratory distress syndrome.

We have studied a respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) occurring in newborn calves of the Belgian White and Blue (BWB) breed that represents the large majority of beef cattle in Belgium. Pulmonary surfactant isolated from 14 BWB newborn calves that died from RDS and from 7 healthy controls was analysed for composition and surface activity. An extremely low content or, in some instances, an absen...
